When can I safely prune my oak trees in Wisconsin?

In Wisconsin and throughout the Upper Midwest, the timing of oak pruning is critical because of oak wilt disease. The sap beetles (Nitidulidae) that spread the oak wilt fungus are most active during warm months, and they're attracted to fresh pruning wounds.

Safe pruning window for oaks in Wisconsin:

• November 1 through March 31 — this is the recommended safe pruning period when sap beetles are inactive
• The Wisconsin DNR strongly advises against pruning oaks from April through October
• Even during the safe window, avoid pruning during unseasonably warm spells (above 50°F for several consecutive days)

If emergency pruning is needed in summer:

• Storm damage or hazard branches that must be addressed immediately
• Seal all cuts immediately with latex paint or wound sealant (this is one of the FEW times wound sealer is recommended — it deters beetles)
• Apply sealant within minutes of making the cut, not hours

Best pruning practices for oaks:

1. Use the 3-cut method for branches larger than 2 inches to prevent bark tearing
2. Cut just outside the branch collar — never leave stubs or cut flush with the trunk
3. Never top an oak — topping creates massive wounds and epicormic growth that weakens the tree
4. Remove no more than 25% of the canopy in a single year for mature trees
5. Disinfect tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol between trees, especially if oak wilt is in your area
