Neem Oil

Neem oil is a naturally derived pesticide extracted from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), native to South Asia. Its primary active compound, azadirachtin, acts as an insect growth regulator, anti-feedant, and repellent. It also has fungicidal properties against some leaf diseases like powdery mildew and black spot.

As an insecticide, neem oil works differently from conventional products. Azadirachtin disrupts insect hormonal systems, preventing molting, feeding, and reproduction. This makes it most effective against immature insects and requires ingestion or direct contact for efficacy. It is relatively selective, primarily affecting leaf-chewing and sap-sucking insects while having lower toxicity to beneficial insects that do not feed on treated plant tissue.

Neem oil is popular for organic and low-toxicity pest management programs. It breaks down rapidly in sunlight and has low mammalian toxicity. However, it should still be used responsibly: direct application can harm aquatic organisms, and spraying during bloom can affect pollinators. For tree care, neem oil is most appropriate for managing minor pest problems on small trees and shrubs. Large-scale infestations on mature trees typically require more targeted systemic treatments for adequate control.
