301 active alerts in this region

TreeIssues monitors plant and tree health threats across Indiana. Below you will find current alerts for pests, diseases, fungi, and invasive species that have been detected in the state. Alerts are sourced from USDA, USFS, and Indiana state agricultural agencies. Each alert includes severity ratings, affected species, symptoms, and recommended treatments.

Dutch Elm Disease

CRITICAL
Disease

A devastating vascular wilt disease spread by elm bark beetles that has killed millions of American elms since the 1930s. The fungus blocks water-conducting vessels, causing rapid wilting. It fundamentally changed the American urban landscape.

Affecting 45 regions

Oak Wilt

CRITICAL
Disease

A lethal fungal disease that affects all oak species, with red oaks dying within weeks of infection. It spreads through root grafts between neighboring oaks and via sap-feeding beetles. White oaks are more resistant but not immune.

Affecting 18 regions

Chestnut Blight

CRITICAL
Fungus

A fungal disease that functionally eliminated the American chestnut as a canopy tree species in eastern forests by the mid-20th century. Once numbering in the billions, mature American chestnuts are now exceedingly rare. Root sprouts survive but are re-infected.

Affecting 25 regions

Pine Wilt Disease

CRITICAL
Disease

A lethal disease of pines caused by the pinewood nematode, which is transmitted by pine sawyer beetles (Monochamus spp.). It causes rapid wilting and death of susceptible pine species, particularly non-native Scots pine and Austrian pine. The nematode clogs resin canals and destroys cells lining them, leading to cessation of resin flow and rapid desiccation. Trees typically die within weeks to months of symptom onset.

Affecting 19 regions

Fire Blight

HIGH
Disease

A bacterial disease that primarily affects members of the rose family, including apple and pear trees. It can destroy entire orchards in a single season. Bacteria spread rapidly during warm, wet spring weather through blossoms and wounds.

Affecting 32 regions

Thousand Cankers Disease

HIGH
Disease

A disease complex involving the walnut twig beetle and an associated fungus that has caused significant mortality of black walnut, particularly in western states. Thousands of small cankers coalesce to girdle branches and the trunk.

Affecting 15 regions

Armillaria Root Rot

HIGH
Fungus

One of the most widespread and destructive forest diseases in the world, caused by a complex of honey mushroom species. It attacks stressed trees through root contact and can persist in dead stumps for decades, infecting nearby healthy trees.

Affecting 36 regions

Rhizosphaera Needlecast

HIGH
Fungus

A common fungal disease of spruce trees, especially Colorado blue spruce, throughout the Midwest and Northeast. The fungus infects current-year needles through stomata, causing them to turn purple-brown and drop prematurely. Inner and lower branches are affected first because humidity is higher there, and the disease progresses upward and outward over successive years. Severely affected trees may retain only the current year's needles at branch tips.

Affecting 25 regions

Stigmina/SNEED Needlecast

HIGH
Fungus

A fungal disease of spruce very similar in appearance to Rhizosphaera needlecast but caused by a different fungus. Often occurs alongside Rhizosphaera. It has become increasingly recognized as a major cause of spruce needle loss, particularly on Colorado blue spruce. Diagnosis requires microscopic examination to distinguish from Rhizosphaera.

Affecting 20 regions

Cytospora Canker

HIGH
Fungus

A common fungal disease of spruce and other conifers that causes branch dieback, typically starting from the lowest branches and progressing upward. Colorado blue spruce and Norway spruce are especially susceptible. The fungus enters through wounds or stressed tissue. White resin bleeding on bark is a hallmark sign. Stressed trees are most vulnerable.

Affecting 25 regions

Bacterial Leaf Scorch

HIGH
Disease

A chronic bacterial disease that affects many shade tree species, particularly oaks, elms, sycamores, and maples. The bacterium is transmitted by xylem-feeding leafhoppers and spittlebugs and colonizes the water-conducting vessels, restricting water flow. Symptoms worsen each year as more of the canopy is affected. There is no cure.

Affecting 19 regions

Verticillium Wilt

HIGH
Fungus

A soilborne fungal disease that affects hundreds of plant species including maples, elms, redbuds, and many other trees. The fungus invades through roots and colonizes the vascular system, blocking water transport. Symptoms often appear suddenly on individual branches. Maples are particularly susceptible. Olive-green to brown streaking in the sapwood is diagnostic.

Affecting 27 regions

Phytophthora Root Rot

HIGH
Fungus

A group of water-mold diseases that attack the roots and root collar of many tree species. Phytophthora thrives in wet, poorly drained soils. It destroys fine roots and can girdle the trunk at the soil line. Affected trees show a general decline that is often misdiagnosed as drought stress. Oaks, dogwoods, rhododendrons, and many other species are susceptible.

Affecting 31 regions

Bronze Birch Borer

HIGH
Insect

A native North American wood-boring beetle that attacks birch trees, especially paper birch and European white birch in landscape settings. Larvae feed under the bark in a serpentine pattern, disrupting nutrient and water transport. Dieback starts at the top of the crown and progresses downward, the opposite pattern of many other pests.

Affecting 26 regions

Emerald Ash Borer

MODERATE
Insect

An invasive wood-boring beetle native to Asia that has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across North America since its discovery in Michigan in 2002. Larvae feed on the inner bark, disrupting nutrient and water transport.

Affecting 36 regions

Spotted Lanternfly

MODERATE
Insect

An invasive planthopper native to China first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014. While it primarily threatens agriculture (grapes, hops, fruit trees), it feeds on over 70 plant species. It excretes honeydew that promotes sooty mold growth.

Affecting 21 regions

Spongy Moth (formerly Gypsy Moth)

MODERATE
Insect

An invasive moth introduced to Massachusetts in 1869. Caterpillars defoliate hundreds of tree species, preferring oaks. Repeated defoliation weakens and can kill trees, especially when combined with drought stress.

Affecting 20 regions

Japanese Beetle

MODERATE
Insect

An invasive beetle introduced to New Jersey in 1916. Adults skeletonize leaves of over 300 plant species while larvae (grubs) damage turf grass roots. They are particularly damaging to linden, birch, and fruit trees.

Affecting 35 regions

Bagworm

MODERATE
Insect

A moth whose larvae construct distinctive spindle-shaped bags from silk and foliage fragments. They feed on over 100 species of trees and shrubs, with conifers being most vulnerable since they cannot regrow lost foliage as readily.

Affecting 28 regions

Cedar-Apple Rust

MODERATE
Fungus

A fungal disease requiring two hosts to complete its life cycle: eastern red cedar (juniper) and apple or crabapple trees. It causes economic losses in apple orchards and aesthetic damage to landscape cedars.

Affecting 34 regions

Anthracnose

MODERATE
Fungus

A group of fungal diseases causing leaf spots, cankers, and shoot blight on many shade trees. Sycamore, dogwood, maple, and oak are commonly affected. Cool, wet spring weather promotes infection of newly expanding leaves.

Affecting 38 regions

Apple Scab

MODERATE
Fungus

The most economically important disease of apples worldwide. The fungus overwinters in fallen leaf litter and releases spores during spring rains. Severe infections reduce fruit quality and yield and can defoliate trees by mid-summer.

Affecting 26 regions

Diplodia Tip Blight

MODERATE
Fungus

A common fungal disease of pines, particularly Austrian and Scots pines in landscape settings. Spores infect new shoots as buds open in spring. Repeated infections progressively kill branches from the bottom of the tree upward.

Affecting 19 regions

Dothistroma Needle Blight

MODERATE
Fungus

A fungal disease of pines that causes premature needle loss and can significantly reduce growth and vigor. It affects many pine species but is especially damaging to Austrian, ponderosa, and Monterey pines. It has increased in severity with climate change.

Affecting 19 regions

Asian Lady Beetle

MODERATE
Insect

Found alive but in terrible shape. Was swimming around in the water bowl we put out for feral cats here. Also appeared to have had a run in with a spider web, as it had something stuck all over it. Got a lot of suggestions for fungi and parasitoids that target ladybeetles, so maybe its appearance is more a function of a disease or parasite process taking place. It was definitely having trouble getting adound, but could be due to having been in the water for a long time and/or having bits of web

This bug was on a stick I accidentally knocked into the water, and it couldn’t make it to dry land. I waded in and scooped it and put it on this sunny spot. It turns out it has a super bright white belly. I did not photograph it until it was settled, because being knocked into the water seemed like enough trouble. It had a bad day, but it only took about five minutes for it to compose itself and fly away.
